Egide: key industrial partner for Leonardo in the UK for its IASI-NG Space programme

Press Release

Egide : a key industrial partner for Leonardo in the UK for its IASI-NG Space programme

Bollène, October 1, 2019 – 07:00am (CET)Egide (Euronext Paris FR0000072373 – Reuters: EGID.PA – Bloomberg : GID) was very proud to be invited to Leonardo’s Southampton facility as a key industrial partner following the delivery of the first package for IASI-NG (Infra-red Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer – New Generation).

In recent years, space cooperation between the UK and France has gone from strength to strength, notably in the fields of Earth observation and climate action.

The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer - New Generation (IASI-NG) programme, which is a partnership between Leonardo, Airbus Defence & Space, the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales and the UK Space Agency, will measure temperature and water vapour profiles and gas concentration in the Earth’s atmosphere, with its first flight scheduled for 2022 aboard the European satellite MetOp-SG-A.

Leonardo is a historical customer and partner of Egide for high performance image sensing applications. Egide was chosen for the IASI programme for its space heritage and reputation for the quality of its hermetic ceramic and metal packages in this domain.
Egide has several decades of experience is supplying solutions for the most demanding space programmes on all continents.

Peter Dillon, VP Infrared Detectors and site lead for Leonardo in Southampton said: “We need industrial and technological partners able to understand our business and the challenges we must face. Egide has been a part in this for a long time. We have always been confident with Egide’s quality and know-how. Egide's recognized expertise and the excellence of their engineering team is highly appreciated by Leonardo’s technical experts. Both teams have been able to work closely to optimise the design of this detector package for the benefit of our customers on this landmark scientific programme.”

James Collins, President and CEO of the Egide group, comments: “We are very pleased that Leonardo continues to consider Egide as a preferred supplier of hermetic packages for infrared applications.  Design and manufacture of hermetic packaging using our High Temperature Cofired Ceramic and electroplating technologies has been among Egide’s core competencies for many years. It is even more rewarding to see our packages used for such an important mission as the IASI-NG programme.”

Egide’s manufacturing sites have qualified their major industrial processes for Space applications. This includes assemblies with Glass-to-Metal seals and High Temperature Cofired Ceramic-to-Metal seals, using low density materials.

Egide’s dedicated Space solutions also cover the qualification of high-performance power dissipation materials and specific plating processes for parts used in satellites and launchers.
